Letter to Editor, Wednesday, August 7, 2013 in Jonesboro Sun
In 2008, Attorney General Dustin McDaniel cost Arkansans 22 working days on securing signatures for a ballot initiative to deny state benefits to illegal aliens. McDaniel delayed the approval of the ballot title twice, leaving only 39 working days for the sponsoring organization to collect about 62,000 signatures.
Since 1,439 signatures a day were collected during those 39 working days, McDaniel cost the citizens of Arkansas 31,658 signatures — 22 days times 1,439 — five times more than the 5,000 signature shortage needed to get it on the ballot for a vote.
That worked so well for Democrat McDaniel that he did the same thing this time on the referendum to reverse the private option Medicaid expansion under Obamacare. Our Arkansas Constitution allows citizens to reverse laws passed by the Legislature by getting enough signatures in 90 days to put the referendum on the ballot. If this Medicaid expansion law in Arkansas is not reversed, an estimated 250,000 new enrollees will be added to Medicaid, with insurance premiums paid for by taxpayers.
So this time our attorney general waited 30 days to approve the referendum title, leaving the sponsoring organization only 60 days to collect signatures. Even then McDaniel substituted a different ballot title than submitted that in his words would be “more suitable, complete and correct.” More suitable for whom? Liberals, of course.
But that is the way the liberal Democrats work. If they can’t beat you at the ballot box, they shop for some friendly judge or liberal court, sign executive orders, issue negative attorney general opinions or use tricks like McDaniel has twice with petitions to override the will of the people.
If you want to beat the Democrats at their own game, make sure you sign this petition to reverse the biggest government expansion in Arkansas. This week is the last full week, ending Aug. 10, to collect the 46,000 signatures needed to get this referendum on the ballot. Canvassers will be 25 feet from the door of the Office of Motor Vehicles (DMV office), 206 Southwest Drive, Jonesboro, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., so please come and sign the petition.
One legislator has already written a guest editorial saying the cost of Medicaid expansion in Arkansas will probably be four times the original estimate. No surprise there, huh!

On Tuesday, he approved the popular name as submitted but substituted and certified a different ballot title that he said would be “more suitable, complete, and correct” than the submitted ballot title.
